Olivia took Walter aside, bent her long ostrich neck down to his level, and said quietly, “I’m not so sure I really want to attend this do if that idiot parrot is going to be there...”

Walter shrugged his hefty shoulders and looked hard at her.

“But my dear, you simply have to be there! We’ll just ignore the fool, and have a good time, okay? I ordered a crate of J.C. Leroux, especially for you, ‘cos I know how you like your champagne...”

“You did!” cried the ostrich, fluttering her eyelashes at Walter. “Oh Wally! That was so sweet of you! Thank you!”

“So you’ll come?” urged Walter, a little wary of Olivia’s flirting, nonetheless. She did it with everyone, though, so he thought he was safe enough. He preferred to keep things simple.

“Of course I will! But will you protect me from that parrot?” she asked, doing her eyelash trick again. “I think he actually fancies me quite a bit, you know?”

“Consider it done!” smiled Walter gallantly.
